This is Our New Reality
The hills glistened with smoldering embers and pockets of raging uncontrolled fire. Soon, these pockets would unite to form one unending wall of flames that would tower into the dry California air. Soon, this wildfire would grow so big and powerful it would be able to create its own weather.
Alexis looked up to the sound of a helicopter. It flew towards the burning hillside with great speed. She thought it was going to crash it was moving so low and fast. But, as the last second it veered up, following the contour of the hill, dumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of water from a nearby lake onto the merging flames. The cool blast only seemed to temporarily help.
By the time the helicopter was out of sight the fire looked as it did before the water drop, if not bigger. California was fighting a losing battle and Alexis knew it, she just wondered when Washington would see it.
Thick gray smoke bubbled into the air for thousands of feet, forming pyrocumulus clouds. It should have been seen as a beacon she thought, a beacon showing what humanity had done to itself.
"This is our new reality," she whispered to herself. "A world on fire…"
